Look for the words List of Tables template and List of Figures template in the boxes below for links to two separate formatted Microsoft Word documents that can be used to create your List of Tables or List of Figures. If even one numbered table or figure appears in your manuscript, then a List of Tables and/or a List of Figures must be included in your manuscript following the Table of Contents. If both are used, arrange the List of Tables before the List of Figures. NOTE: The templates were created using the 2013 version of Microsoft Word. If a template is downloaded in another version of Word or another word processing program, the formatting may be incorrect. Also, if a template is copied and pasted into another document, the settings of that document (margins, page number settings, font style, etc.) may affect the look of the template.
Please see the sample thesis or dissertation pages throughout and at the end of this document for illustrations. The following order is required for components of your thesis or dissertation: Title Page Copyright Page Abstract Dedication, Acknowledgements, and Preface (each optional) Table of Contents, with page numbers List of Tables, List of Figures, or List of Illustrations, with titles and page numbers (if applicable) List of Abbreviations (if applicable) List of Symbols (if applicable) Chapters, including: Introduction, if any Main body, with consistent subheadings as appropriate Appendices (if applicable) Endnotes (if applicable) References (see section on References for options) Many of the components following the title and copyright pages have required headings and formatting guidelines, which are described in the following sections. Please consult the Sample Pages to compare your document to the requirements. A Checklist is provided to assist you in ensuring your thesis or dissertation meets all formatting guidelines. Title Page The title page of a thesis or dissertation must include the following information: The title of the thesis or dissertation in all capital letters and centered 2″ below the top of the page. Your name, centered 1″ below the title. Do not include titles, degrees, or identifiers. The name you use here does not need to exactly match the name on your university records, but we recommend considering how you will want your name to appear in professional publications in the future. The following statement, centered, 1″ below your name: “A [ dissertation or thesis ] submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of [ insert degree ] in the [ insert department or program name ] in the [ named school ].” End this statement with a period. Notes on this.
You are here Tables, figures, illustration requirements and tips Include captions/titles/headings for tables, figures, and other illustrations as paragraph text. This allows captions and headings to be auto-generated into the Table of Contents (ToC) or the lists that appear after the ToC. The maximum width for objects on a portrait page is 6 inches (15.24 cm). Text wrapping should be set to “In Line with Text” (no wrapping). Consult the figure, table, caption sections of the Thesis Template Instructions and apply the appropriate styles to format: captions paragraphs to which the images are attached figure notes, if any Source Notes or Footnotes for tables/figures/illustrations are inserted manually. Insert the note in the paragraph directly below the table/figure in Word. If a footnote: superscript the letter or symbol within the table/figure. superscript the letter or symbol at the beginning of the footnote. Table specifications Font: Minimum Arial Narrow 10pt for large tables. Line Spacing: Single-spaced with space between rows.  To change the font or line spacing for tables see the Thesis Template Instructions. Figures and other image specifications Font: Ensure that text in image files follow the overall Font Specifications and is large enough to be read when inserted into the document. The font in images should appear to be the same size as the text in your thesis. Line Spacing: Single-spaced. How to format an illustration or image Images should be sized to an equivalent print resolution of 300 dots per inch (dpi). This is the minimum standard for print-quality images. For example, an image 6 inches wide should be 1800 pixels wide to produce an equivalent resolution of 300dpi.6 inches X 300dpi = 1800px. ​For best results, insert images as flattened.tif.png, or high quality.jpg files. ​Crop as closely as possible around the image to remove blank space and.
Including a List of Tables and/or a List of Figures is optional. If you have one list, you must have the other list. Each list starts on a new page regardless of how many entries are on the page.
