Deadline:  March 15, 2016 Maximum Award:  00 and an all-expense paid trip to the nation’s capital for the winner and their parents Eligibility:  All high school students The members of the Foreign Service are like the olive branches in the right talon of the American eagle, they advise the president and Secretary of State about foreign relations and foreign policies.  The members of the Foreign Service are foreign affairs professionals who keep the peace and strive for a better world. This essay competition is open to 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th graders who are required to write an essay of 1000 to 1250 words.    The 2016 Essy Topic: In 1,000-1,250 words, discuss one of the following topics: Imagine that you are a member of the U.S. Foreign Service recently assigned to one of the following eight bureaus within the Department of State or the U.S. Agency for International Development: Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations (State) Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (State) Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs (State) Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (State) Bureau of Energy Resources (State) Bureau for Democracy, Conflict and Humanitarian Assistance (USAID) Bureau for Food Security (USAID) Bureau for Global Health (USAID) You have been tasked with seeking peacebuilding solutions to a particular conflict or crisis that threatens U.S. interests abroad. Examples include, but are not limited to: ongoing tensions between Israel and the Palestinian Territories, escalating violence in Iraq, destabilizing forces in Mali and sectarian violence in Myanmar. You are welcome to explore conflicts related to economic crises, resource scarcity, refugee influxes or any other topic that interests you. 1. Your essay should not exceed 1,250 words. Fill out the registration form. The teacher information is very important, as your teacher will be consulted should your essay be chosen as one of the top 25. If you do not include teacher information, your essay will not be accepted. 2.All submissions must be original work, have a title and include a word count (word count does not apply to the list of sources.) All sources, including articles you have written, must be cited. 3. Attach a copy of your original work in English on the designated topic, which should include a comprehensive list of sources consulted. You must write on one of the topics provided; essays on other topics will not be accepted. Please use the topic as the title of your essay. 4. Entries must be typed, double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman or an equivalent font with a one-inch margin on all sides of the page. Standards of content and style from MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 7th ed., will be expected for (1) documentation of sources in the text of your essay (see pages 123-212); (2) the format of the list of works cited (see sample page at end of the MLA Handbook); and (3) margins and indentation (see sample page also at end of Handbook). 5. A bibliography following the MLA Handbook must be included. Essays should use a variety of sources—academic journals, news magazines, newspapers, books, government documents, publications from research organizations. At least three of the cited materials should be primary sources (a document, speech, or other sort of evidence written, created or otherwise produced during the time under study). General encyclopedias, including Wikipedia,  are not acceptable as sources. Essays citing general encyclopedias in notes or bibliography may be disqualified. Websites should not be the only source of information for your essay and need to be properly.
