Timings: 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM; Weekly holiday: Tuesday. Have you guys seen a white peacock before? This is the first time for me! In the blazing April heat of Chennai, I decided to go to the Vandalur Zoo (Arignar Anna Zoological Park) in Vandalur, Chennai. I was there around 8:30 AM (when the zoo opens) but I spent some time having breakfast at the Sangeetha restaurant opposite to it. Ah, what lovely food! The Vandalur zoo is on the GST road and is situated about 15 KM further off from the airport. I took the Chennai bypass on the Ponamalee road, and was able to reach this place faster. This zoo/park is very big (It’s the biggest in India, it seems) and hence if people want to explore this place fully, they can take the electric vehicle (which stops at each enclosure)/a bicycle on rent. I was in a good mood to walk, so I just walked the entire stretch. It is possible, but I was too tired to go to the aquarium and a few other exhibits displayed at the end. It seems, lion safari and elephant safari are available, but I didn’t take them (mainly due to the crowd). On a holiday, you can expect this zoo to be heavily crowded. There are many animals kept in this zoo, like the bear shown above but almost none of them are kept in small closed cages (except a few of them like jackal and leopard). This is a good and it seems, the zoo is trying to create a habitat closer to the natural habitat for animals and birds. The zoo is also involved in a lot of conservation activities by admitting and breeding rare species in a protected environment. There is one full fledged veterinary hospital inside the zoo premises.   Free ranging deer is ok, I have seen such free ranging deer already in Guindy National park. But free ranging snakes? OMG! It seems, one nine feet python in this zoo escaped from its enclosure last year. It should have been caught by now, but if not maybe we can catch it.
Our school broke up for the winter vacations. One day I went to Vandalur zoo with my friends. The entry was by tickets. We went up several steps to purchase the tickets. Then we entered the zoo. We walked up and down. A deep canal ran parallel to the footpath. Beyond the canal there were small trees. The cages of the birds were hanging down the branches of the trees. Their multi-coloured feathers gleamed into sunlight. Next we saw a small water pond with many kinds of birds swimming in it. It was interesting to see new birds in an enclosure. They twittered, chirped and whistled. They presented nature’s voice. It was pleasing indeed to hear them. We saw many birds there - sparrows, nightingales and owls of different colours set in the closed cage. The owls sat with closed eyes lost in thoughts. We bade a silent farewell to those philosophers among birds and walked on. We visited the tigers, lions and bears shut in cages. We saw some hippos and also a rhino. We heared the loud roar of a lion. One tiger was in a fit of anger. The tiger was strong and handsome. I was reminded of Blake’s lines. “What immortal hand or eye dare frame the fearful symmetry? Then we enjoyed a boat cruise. I enjoyed it most. We also saw many other fauna like crocodiles, snakes, frogs, fish ad a hundred other creatures. They all felt at home in the zoo. Last of all we saw different kinds of monkeys. We passed many happy hours in the zoo. It was a pleasing experience for all of.
The Arignar Anna Zoological Park, popularly known as the Vandalur Zoo is located in Vandalur, which is about 30 kilometers from Chennai city. Other attractions in the zoo are: Nocturnal animal houseSafari ParkA walk-through aviary Pre-historic animal park Reptile section Prey-Predator enclosures Zoo education and interpretation An aquarium. The enclosure for the king cobra has an air conditioner fitted, as it cannot stand the summer heat. The soaring temperature in Chennai is bound to give the animals a tough time. Chennai (Tamil:சென்னை) [1], formerly known as Madras, this 369-year-old city is the capital of the southern state of Tamilnadu and is India's sixth-largest city in terms of population with an estimated population of 7.45 million (2005).[2]It serves as one of the main gateways to South India and has a thriving local culture and art scene and is one of the major destinations for medical tourism. The Horse and rider, Anna Salai. [edit] Understand [edit] History Long the site of earlier coastal settlements, Madras was founded in 1639 when the British East India Company (represented by Francis Day and Andrew Cogan and aided by a local translator Beri Thimappa) was granted land to build a trading settlement by the local Telugu ruler (Nayak) of the suburb of Vandavasi, Damerla Venkatapathy Naidu on his father's name Damerla Chennappa Naidu. The document of the land grant is dated 22 August 1639, and hence Madras celebrates its birthday on 22 August each year as Madras day. Madras was one of the first outposts of British East India Company.
