BULLETIN BOARD October 3, 2012 Essay writing competition The seventh edition of India’s largest essay-writing competition for school children — Tata Building India (TBI) School Essay Competition 2012-13 began in Mumbai. Targeted at over 2 million students from 6000 schools across 170 cities, this national-level contest inspires creativity and passion in young minds in building positive thoughts towards the country. Having covered 7.5 million students through its previous six editions, this year, the competition adds two new languages — Telugu and Malayalam, to its regular set of eight languages — English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada and Oriya. The TBI School Essay Competition will be a two-phase activity in participating schools. In the first phase, an inspirational film will be screened as a stimulus for motivating students to think about the country. As part of this, a Tata-themed documentary: Speak for the Earth will be screened at the schools, accompanied by an audiovisual on the Tata Building India. The activity will culminate in the essay competition where students will be asked to write an essay on the given topic. Essays at the school level are shortlisted by the identified judges within the school. From these shortlisted entries per school, the school level winners are identified through an independent judging process. The essays of school level winners in each city are collected and evaluated by a panel of 3 judges from the field of academics and journalism, among others. The best essays win city-level representation The best essays from each city are finally judged by an elite panel comprising eminent people to choose the national winners in each language. The essay is written by the child only once and is evaluated at three levels. The winners at each level are rewarded and special functions are held to felicitate the city level.
