ArticlesMaryknoll Essay Contest: Vatican Responds to Letters from Youth The letters written by the six winners of the “2014 Maryknoll Magazine Student Essay Contest” were seen by Pope Francis. The theme of the “2014 Maryknoll Magazine Student Essay Contest” was for grade and high school students to write letters to Pope Francis that explained how they or other young people are following the pope’s personal message for them — “Have courage. Go forward. Make noise.” Pope Francis speaks frequently to the world’s youth, whom he considers the “architects of the future.” The contest received more than 8,000 entries, with the winning letters composed by students from Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas and the Federated States of Micronesia. The six winning letters were sent to Pope Francis and Maryknoll magazine Managing Editor Marge Gaughan just received a wonderful reply from the Vatican. A copy of the Vatican letter will be presented to each of the six student winners.

My Father has always been a man of honesty, fairness, and love. He was always the type of Father that never lied, and loved his family and friends unconditional. One of his sayings was, Do you know your Mother and I love you? Do we lie to you? The answer - yes and no. Then it doesn't matter what you say to anyone when you're upset with us, you know the truth. My Father is a SAINT! He never judges anyone, he will help out anyone in need of assistance. My life has been such a learning experience every day because of his wisdom and love. I would have to write a book to Better Made to truly give him the justice and honor he deserves. I know other Fathers in this contest are great, as well, but I am biased and only know my Father's gift he has given to me, and my brother. I will never be able to tell him or show him how much he means to me, because it is infinite. I will never be the man he is and one day I just hope to be able to stand on just one step of his stage of greatness. Thank you for you time and for at least reading a bit of how I love my Pop. -- Tim Valik Submissions Dad, Padre, Poppers, Daddy, even Pumpkin Grandpa.he has many different names, but most of all, he's my 1. My dad says I am the best but he is to me. My dad is special. My dad is greater than fudge. My dad is so great he carries us up to bed. I like my dad because he is nice. When it is baseball season, he lets us go to the baseball field. -- Ty Brickell, first grade, Valley Falls, about his father Jim Brickell My dad is like the sun, he warms me up when I am cold. He teaches me things about the world. Sometimes I cry because I miss him so much. I wake up at two in the morning to see him he's so late when he comes home. He teaches me math, too. He's like a teacher that goes almost everywhere with me. He means a lot to me. Sometimes I can't believe he's my dad. He's so nice. I wish he can come home every day so I can spend more time with him. I am so proud of him when he does speeches for Scouts. -- Kristina Kesler, third grade, Burlingame, about father David Kesler I love my dad because he makes me feel special. He swings me on the swings. He makes me touch the leaves with my feet and makes the breeze fly through my hair. He takes me to the park and hangs out with me. We eat ice cream together. We snuggle and watch movies. He says I'm the best when I'm not and he is. He brings me treats from his office. He tucks me in bed. He says I'm his only sugar, the only one he has in the world. He smiles all the time. -- Erin Wallace, second grade, Winchester, about father Michael Wallace My dad is the best dad ever. He is a pharmacist at Walgreens. We always share memories together. When we are together we like to play sports, and especially going to basketball games. And we like to go to the Royals games, too. He is like a really big football player that doesn't let anybody tackle me. We always laugh at each other. Sometimes we go on walks together (run). We read together like one hour a day. If he passed away, I would cry my lights out. When I fall, he always picks me up. I think.
