The Rotterdam School of Management within Erasmus University enjoys a top 10 MBA ranking in Europe. It offers the RSM MBA in 3 variations – the One-year International Full-time MBA, Executive MBA and Global Executive OneMBA. Sameer Kamat (founder of MBA Crystal Ball) had a tête-à-tête with Maryke Luijendijk-Steenkamp – Director Admissions and Marketing at the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University. Maryke relocated from South Africa to Rotterdam and spends a lot of time globe-trotting to find the best talent for the RSM MBA. When she’s not going through marathon application review sessions, she’s training hard for the Rotterdam Marathon. If you think you can be ‘comfortable with being uncomfortable‘ (a trait that’s valued by the RSM MBA admissions team), then read on. Nov, 21, 2007 This post analyzes the essay questions for Fall 2008 Admission to RSM Erasmus University’s International Full-Time MBA Program. In doing so, I will make reference to the Information Session and Masterclass that I attended in Tokyo on November 13, 2007. Depending on what chart you look at RSM ranks 18th (Wall Street Journal Recruiter’s Poll), 30th (Financial Times), and 46th (Economist Intelligence Unit), and receives an honorable mention, but is unranked in Businessweek (but they only rank the top ten internationally). You might ask why I am blogging about RSM’s essays, when I have yet to cover higher ranked European Programs like INSEAD, IMD, SDA Bocconi, and London Business School. Actually, I have partially covered LBS already and will finish analyzing their questions, after I stop feeling like they are watching me , but there are a few reasons why I wanted to cover RSM. First, I wanted to cover a mid-ranked program that has a very solid ROI. Consider this, the typical RSM graduate forgoes a mean of ,031 and afterwards the mean base salary for most recent graduates is 4,480 (data taken from Businessweek). To me that signifies a serious improvement in one’s career opportunities. Whatever one thinks of the Wall Street Journal’s Recruiter’s Poll, the very fact that RSM ranks 18th internationally (everywhere but US programs) is a good indicator of the market value of the degree. Second, London Business School, INSEAD, HEC, Cambridge, RSM, Oxford, and SDA Bocconi are the European MBA Programs I have the most experience with (actually basically in that order). I have helped clients get into other programs in Europe, but those are the schools I know best. Therefore I think RSM is a good place to start. Third, I attended the RSM Information Session last week, so I want to get my thoughts down before I forget them. Let’s take a look at RSM’s essay.
Professional experienceAll applicants should have at least three years of post-graduate work experience and clear professional targets for your career. Academic requirementsCandidates must have a university degree (bachelor, master, PhD) or equivalent, along with a valid GMAT/GRE report*. Global mindsetOur MBA candidates must value diversity and work collaboratively with people from many different cultures. English proficiencyBecause clear communication is essential in our classrooms, students should be strong English speakers. We don’t require TOEFL, IELTS or PTE scores initially, but the admissions committee may request them at any point during the admissions process. Soft skillsOur students have the intangible skills that lead to success. These include qualities like leadership potential, effective communication skills, professional drive, maturity, creativity, adaptability, independence and self-confidence. * RSM conducts an in-house business case assessment in lieu of the GMAT/GRE. Contact the admissions office if you wish to be considered. The GMAT/GRE can be waived for PhD graduates.
Rotterdam School of Management (RSM) is one of four business schools in the Netherlands to feature in the latest edition of the QS Global 200 Business Schools Report – and the highest-ranked among them, placing just inside Europe’s top 20 in the eyes of international employers of MBA graduates and academics in the fields of business and management. The Netherlands is also the 10th most popular MBA study destination in the world, based on QS’s most recent survey of international applicants, so – for those looking to learn more about the ins and outs of applying to RSM’s MBA programs, we sounded out Maryke Luijendijk-Steenkamp, the school’s director  of marketing and admissions. In the following Q&A, Maryke outlines how RSM’s application process is designed with the intention of accommodating candidates from around the world and says that admitted students are even picked up at the local train station on their arrival in Rotterdam What is the typical acceptance rate to the Rotterdam School of Management MBA program? The acceptance ratio differs per program. For our full-time MBA program, we accept about one in three applicants. For our executive MBA offerings, this is much higher. At RSM, we will always strive to have our acceptance rate as high as possible since we value our personal approach to admissions. Thus, we try to ensure that we eliminate applicants who are not eligible and/or a fit for our program before they even apply. This we do through the extensive CV assessments and pre-applications conducted as part of our recruitment process. With our executive offerings, we have the opportunity to meet almost every applicant prior to application, hence the high acceptance rate. Due to the geographical constraints, the same cannot be said of our full-time program, but we do try to reach as many applicants for this program as possible prior to application. What is a.
Yesterday evening, I had my interview with an AdCom of Rotterdam School of Management (RSM). This interview was over Skype because I was not able to attend the interview held previous week when she was in Bangalore (due to some personal reasons). The interview started at 8:30 PM IST and went over for about 35 minutes. She decided to switch off her cam, because of dim lights in room. I was on cam. Why you left it so early? Do you think you could have waited for some more time there? 4. Tell me something about the NGO you are associated with and your responsibilities there? 5. If I say, that you are taking this interview for RSM, then what is that one key thing you would be looking in the applicant? 6. How are the key things that influences Indian businessmen or entrepreneurs in doing business? 7. How your friends describe you in 3 words? 8. What will you bring to the RSM community? 9. What is that one thing you are very passionate about at this point in your life? 10. What are the things that really daunts you when you think of coming to RSM? 11. Do you think you are a leader? Why you think that? What kind of leader are you? 12. What kind of leadership skills you want to improve upon in RSM? 13. What changes you see in yourself after doing MBA from RSM? 14. If career is not a factor, do you want to get settled in Netherlands or back in your country? 15. In.
